When should your pet have a wellness exam?

A wellness exam, along with any appropriate vaccinations, should ideally be done every year to ensure your pet is healthy.

Which vaccinations does your pet need?

The one vaccination required by law is Rabies. However, there are multiple other vaccinations that help keep your pet safe and healthy.

Core vaccinations for dogs include:

  • DHLPP a 5-way combination vaccine that protects your dog from
  • Distemper (virus)
  • Hepatitis (liver infection)
  • Lepto (infection)
  • Parvo (virus)
  • Parainfluenza (virus)
  • The Lyme vaccine is very important, particularly in our area. Hillsborough County has one of the highest rates of Lyme disease in the state of New Hampshire.
  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough) is often required by doggy day care facilities, groomers, and boarding kennels.

Core vaccinations for cats include:

  • FELOC (feline distemper) is a 4-way combination vaccine that protects your cat from:
       – Rhinotracheitis (virus – respiratory)
       – Calici (virus – respiratory)
       – Panleukopenia (virus)
       – Chlamydia Psittaci (bacterial microorganism – respiratory)
  • FELV: Feline leukemia (virus)

What types of products do we offer for pets?

We currently carry Bravecto for dogs and cats for flea and tick prevention, and Interceptor Plus for heartworm prevention.

How can you protect your pet from parasites?

Having your pet tested for parasites annually with a fecal test and making sure they are up to date on their heartworm prevention (which also protects against other internal parasites) can better protect them.

How often should your pet receive vaccinations?

Most vaccinations are done annually. A pet’s initial Rabies vaccine is good for 1 year, and any subsequent Rabies vaccinations are good for 3 years.

Does Great Brook Veterinary Clinic perform animal surgery?

Yes, we perform general surgery for cats and dogs. Appointments are required for elective surgeries and procedures.

Should your animal get microchipped?

Microchipping can increase the chances of returning your animal home if they get lost. The chip has a registration number that proves your ownership. Many animal hospitals and shelters have microchip scanners, making it easier to identify your registration number and get in contact with you.

Do you need to clean your pet’s teeth?

Your pet’s oral hygiene is essential to their overall health and well-being. Dental chews and other products can naturally brush your pet’s teeth. We give periodontal scores when examining your pet ranging from 1 (brand new teeth) to 5 (extreme amounts of tartar, infection etc) and recommend cleanings for any that have a score over 3.
“The people who work there are super friendly and love seeing my dog. Dr. Tom is friendly and super knowledgeable. He really takes the time to make sure both you and your pet are good and answers all of your questions and concerns.”
